Sandune Archery Club

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 12-22-11

From the President,

What a great year we have had and it is because of you the members. As with any organization or club the membership is the driving force and I want to thank all those members that have contributed in one way or another to keeping us as the best archery club in SC.

We had some good shoots and SC archers have supported us by attending our events. The practice range has had a face lift with new target butts, which was supported by our “Sponsor a Target” drive. All who helped fund this drive, a plaque is posted on a target butt for support. It took several workdays to build and replace them and to those of you that worked to accomplish this face lift I thank you. Hard work and some long days for some. The driving force was our new Vice-President Matt Brandon.

Speaking of new Vice-President, Matt Brandon has step up and filled that much needed position. For the short time that Matt has been in office he has made a big impact. The Youth Director is also filled by Scott Rahner and with 3 children he has a good insight on our youth. The Archery for Kids Day looks to becoming a regular event for us and Scott will at the helm as we draw our youth in the area to shoot archery. We do need a secretary and if anyone is interested please call me and I will review the duties of that office.

As I mention the Archery for Kids Day was fantastic. Our March event brought out over 100 kids!!! We also had one in November with around 40 kids. Sandune Archery Club wants to Thank Socastee High School, Socastee Elementary, St. James Middle and Conway High for allowing us to barrow their equipment for these events.

Sandune archery club was involved with several events this year and it was great to see our members come and help. We assisted Burgess Elementary with hosting the Horry County NASP qualifier and Lake City’s Outdoor Sportsman festival.

Our Club Champion is Kelly Rogers. With some fine shooting and a day of fun, our Championship Games was very enjoyable. We have 15 members participate and with some great weather and food it was great to see our shooters having fun.

2012 we will be 50 years old and that is quite an accomplishment. We are the oldest and best archery club in the State and I would say the surrounding States also. We had a logo contest and Shawn Dixon’s logo was chosen as the winner. The logo on the top of this page is it. A very very close 1st was Andrew Bunyasaranand with a surfboard as a back drop on our current logo is also going to be used. We have yellow t-shirts with the winning logo and black t’s with the surfboard logo.

Plenty of shoots this coming year with 6 scheduled SCAA shoots and Archery for Kids shoot. Our biggest event will be the NFAA Southeastern Marked 3D Sectional in April. This is a 2 day event and we have hosted this event in the past. Many people have asked us to host it again the past couple of years and have decided to do so. Members are going to be needed, so we will post those needs as we get closer. Door prizes will be needed and if we can get an early start on collecting them it will make our flyers look better with those included.

I would like to see more of you to come and shoot with us after all that is what we do as a club. A new archery shop has opened on Hwy 9 and he has an indoor range. Let’s start a weekly league and have fun.

Hope everyone has a terrific Christmas and that God blesses each of you and your families.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 7-1-11

Members and friends,

Well our SCAA shoot schedule is over for the year and we had some great shoots. I want to thank all the members that came to shoot with us and those that help. I am truly grateful to those that come and give us a hand.

There are still a few events we have for the year and we need to show those (BASS PRO SHOP and the PALMETTO OUTDOOR SPORTS FESTIVAL) that have ask us to host their event that they made the right choice in choosing Sandune Archery Club. A good way for us to show that, is by as many members participating either in the event or assisting us with it. Another Archery for Kids day has been talked about also so visit the website and look for e-mails as details become available on these events.

The club CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES is scheduled for October 8th. This will be a very enjoyable shoot and is geared to show you the different targets and games archery has. At the beginning of the year we ask members to shoot at least 2 shoots to acquire a handicap and many did. There were some later memberships and some that only shot one and we really want those folks to participate in the Championship Games so what I decided was to allow that score and decrease their handicap by 10%.

With 61 members qualified to shoot for the Club Champion it has the potential be the largest contest for the Club Championship Cup! Let’s make this an awesome shoot and come with family and friends to enjoy a day with us. Remember it is FREE and we will provide food, drinks and fun. We will award the Champion that day and this year all shooters have a shot at being the Champion with the handicap in play! Visit the website to see the handicap chart.

As we move forward to be the best, changes have to be made or updated. Shawn Dixon (webmaster) and Janice Helms (treasurer) have implemented a pay on line for our memberships. This includes Memberships and Visitor applications. Many folks have called about joining on line and this step was taken to hopefully make it easy for people to become members or renew memberships along with visitor passes to our club. It is up and running. Great work you guys!

Speaking of the webmaster, Shawn has taken our site to another level. The front page with the collage of pictures is outstanding and keeping it updated has been super.

At our meeting we talk about 2012 being our 50th year anniversary and how we were going to celebrate that. Well Kenneth Guthrie suggested a contest for our 50th year logo and what a fantastic idea. We want to have all our members and families to put some thought into designing a logo signifying our 50th year in SC. Here are some things to think about or incorporate into the logo, our current logo, 1962-2012, 50th year. Work with these as a minimum and keep in mind that it will be printed on gold or yellow shirts. Think in and out the box and use your imagination. One or two colors will hold down cost. Those that have school connections or teachers can incorporate this into a fun project. The dead line will be October 8, 2011 (Championship Games). The entries will be collected and presented to all who attend our October meeting the 11th to review and narrow it down to 5 finalists. Those logos will be posted on the website for final votes and reveled at the Christmas party on December 3rd. The winner will receive $50 and a shirt and the 4 other finalist will receive a shirt. Our membership has many talented people with great ideas and I have a good feeling this is going to be fun to see what will evolve.

Just because we have no scheduled shoots does not mean we are done. If the club’s members want to have a club shoot we can do that.

Stay on the lookout for E-mails and the website as we grow and spread the sport of archery throughout the community.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 6-23-11

Here are the handicaps for our Championship Games. We encourage all to participate and enjoy the day with us. I am working on revising the games with some different targets and maybe some team events. There is plenty of time before the Games, so please mark that day on your calender to come to the range. Spectators are always wanted, a young girl told me this year after I asked her why she wasn't shooting? Her answer was " I'm a spectator, all sports need spectators". What a great line! Anyone that wants to shoot the Games are more that welcomed to participate. This is Sandune Archery Club members Championship and you need to be a current member and qualified to compete for that Championship. Special guests and members not qualified can shoot the event but not for the Championship. keep visiting the website for updates.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 5-20-11

Hello Members,

I want to share with you some events that are sure to expose us to the public and generate more interest to Sandune Archery Club.

We were approached several months ago by Sam Wingate of the Palmetto Outdoor Sports Festival (aka South Carolina Tobacco Festival) to host a shoot in Lake City in September. This is in conjunction with Marshall's Marina Boat Show and the town of Lake City. Several of us (Janice Helms, Dick Helms, Lefty Bottone and I) went to Lake City, May 11th to see where they wanted us to set up and assist us with any needs. We meet with Stuart Altman (Marshall's Marina), Sam Wingate and Penny (City Chamber). The area that we will be in is great. It is a grass field directly behind Marshall's Marina with a small lake. Plenty of parking and in view of everyone that comes through Marshall's Marina plus the food court is right there (free fish). I was pleasantly surprised to hear how excited they all were on having us there. I was very proud to represent Sandune Archery Club and ensure them with great confidence that we would host a Fun and enjoyable shoot for the Inaugural Palmetto Outdoor Sports Festival (aka South Carolina Tobacco Festival).

Our success is a direct reflection of membership participation and I feel like we have a fantastic membership. The more members that can come onboard with this event and serve as ambassadors for Sandune Archery Club and Archery will solidify to the Palmetto Outdoor Sports Festival and all archers that we ARE the best club in SC.

The course will be 20 – 25 targets with a max distance around 30 yards. A registration tent, drinks and snacks, SAC items for sale. The plan is shoot Saturday only, say 8:30 to 4:30 with awards (payout) at 5.

Tentivily I have us going to Lake City Friday and setting up the course and tents. Meet back Saturday morning around 8. Just a couple of folks need to be there Saturday morning to get things started and the rest can filter in throughout the morning. There is a place for everyone that wants to help, registration, concessions, line officials, welcoming folks and explaining to them archery and the shoot, scoreboard keepers and kids shooting

We will need a trailer large enough to haul targets, tents, coolers, tables and supplies. Signage will need to be made up. More to come.

Ok, now August 27-28, 10am to 5pm. Bass Pro Shop wants us to hold a 10 target shoot at their store. Kelly Rogers is one of our member sand is a manager there and has asked if we would host this shoot. Well YES we would love to. This is another GREAT opportunity for Sandune to gain public exposure our area. The shoot will be shot from 2 tree stands just off the ground. Shoot 5 targets from each stand. I believe this is going to be a fun event for the shooters. Again there is a place for all who want to help.

June 4-5 is our last scheduled shoot for the SCAA. The club championship is on the line and we want more club members to qualify. We asked that you shot at least 2 shoots go get a handi-cap. Now we want you to shoot this shoot to get a handi-cap. When we have our club championship all shooters will be even at the start. Members that have not shot at least one of our shoots can still shoot the event they just won’t be eligible for the championship. Come on out and get qualified for YOUR club Championship shoot. You never know how things turn out; you could be the Club Cup Champion!!!!

I want to thank all that have been helping this year. We have been privileged to promote archery in our community and it looks like God has Blessed us with you, the members, in doing so. Money is tight and our free time seems to be less, but you have managed to donate some of that time to Sandune Archery Club and assist us in promoting and fostering archery.

The highlight so far this year is the kids. We were honored to assist the SCDNR and Burgess Elementary School with the Horry County NASP Championship tournament and our own Archery for Kids day. What an impact on my emotions to see these kids enjoy archery in a competitive environment. The light in their eyes when they looked to you for instructions and positive feedback as they shot went straight to your heart. The Archery for Kids day, to me was worth all of our time. Giving the kids the opportunity to learn and show off their skills to their family and friends was tremendous.

Our monthly meetings are where you need to be to keep up with us as we are moving forward. Every member is important to us as we continue to move ahead. Little things go a long way in helping.

More details will be coming as we get closer to the events, so please make a point to come to our monthly , second Tuesday of each month 7pm at the park building.

You never know how kindness and assistance can make a person or you feel.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 3-10-11

I will catch you up on our last shoots and what we have in the making. First, the shoot we had February 26-27 was great. The weather was perfect and all that came seemed to enjoy the course. About 80 shooters and many that came to see what was going on. I would like to thank ALL that come and help out it really makes a difference.

As some may know back on February 5th we assisted Burgess Elementary school with the Horry County state qualifier for the NASP. 20 Sandune members showed up and that made us look very good. There was a lot of interest from parents on the club and what we offered. It was very impressive to see those kids shoot and enjoy archery. A thought came to mind that we needed to capture these kids and others to keep their involvement in archery. I vision “Archery for Kids” day and presented a plan to the club at our February meeting. With some discussion, the majority felt like this was a good thing to have. The plan was put into effect and March 5th was the date.

Saturday, March 5th was a gorgeous day and the kids started to roll in about 9 am. We have a target shoot that was shot at 10 yards and 15 yards, a 3D shoot that had 10 animals at ranges from 5 yards to 14 yards and a novelty shoot at our dinosaurs. There was also a warm up/instruction range.

The target and 3D where shot from a single line with all shooters shooting at one time then scoring the arrows and coming back to the line to continue shooting that event. The practice/ instruction range was casual. My hat goes off to John Woodlock and Oscar Herrera who showed these kids the proper way to shoot and spent 95% of their time on their knees! What a terrific job they did with the kids. I underestimated the amount of kids and help that was need for the practice range. We will increase that next time. GREAT JOB John and Oscar. Concessions was out the roof, Janice & Dick Helms and Mike Williams were slammed. Every time I looked over there it was surrounded by the kids. Wayne Millard and I ran the target line with 14 shooters per line and were full on every line. I know we had several members that helped with both events and stayed very busy. Thanks Shawn Dixon, Kelly Rogers, Mike King and I probably missed a few.

Over all we had close to 80 kids that shot the events and many many more that went to the practice bales to get instructions but did not shoot. I would feel very confident that we had well over a 100 kids. If you asked John and Oscar it probably felt like a 1000!

There were several members that went and got donations from area business for door prizes. We had 3 drawings throughout the day and it went over big with the kids. Thank you Kristen Black, Roger Huffman and Kelly Rogers from Bass Pro Shop for the gifts.

An overall assessment of the day would have to be “We put on a great event”. A few things to improve on as expected. We have set ourselves up for some awesome Kids day events and I hope that more of you will volunteer to assist us in near future events.

A look in the future around the 3rd week in September, we have been approached by the Palmetto Outdoor Sports Festival (aka South Carolina Tobacco Festival) to host and archery event in Lake City. Now this is at the same time as Marshalls Marina Boat show. There are over 20,000 people that go to this boat show (3 day) and both have partner up to have one large event. All we do is host an archery shoot on Saturday. All fliers, advertisements and any publicity of the event will include us, FREE. I will share any more details as they come along. I am making plans with Sam Windgate (in charge) as to when we could look at the place they want us to set up. This is going to be a challenge for most, as it will involve loading up all that we need to have a shoot.

I feel we need to pursue these opportunities as gas goes up we will need to narrow our focus on the local and surrounding communities for hosting events. People from around the state are going to limit their travel to come to our shoots. Sandune Archery Club has endured 49 years of highs and lows and we seen to always come out to the good. You can’t be successful unless you have people that want to get involved and assist in keeping Sandune Archery Club the best in the state. If we need to realign on how the club needs to host shoots and what kinds of functions need to take place to continue to promote archery then we, as a club must come together and discuss and decide the approach to take.

Good things are coming our way and let’s take advantage of them. We have great members and it shows by how you have responded so far this year. Keep it up.

Again THANK YOU to all that have helped and I apologize for those I missed to mention.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: 2-5-11

Sandune Archery Club’s participation in the Horry County NASP State qualifying tournament that took place Saturday at Burgess Elementary School was terrific. I was very pleased to see so many members come out and show their support of the students from surrounding schools to shoot archery.

What a wonderful feeling to see these young students competing in a well-run tournament. I hope that all of our members that came to assist the DNR and Burgesses Coaching staff have been enlighten to the fact that archery is an interest to the younger generation and how important it is for us to foster this sport in our community. I would feel safe in saying that all who left the gym where excited and hopeful that these kids will be coming out to the range and get involved with us and archery. Many questions were asked of us and most parents seem to like the idea of their children having another sport alternative.

I have talked to a couple of members after the shoot and we all seem to agree that we need to strike up a similar shoot in the near future for these kids. We could host this at the range and include some archery games to keep them shooting while at the range. I have out lined an event and will present it at the meeting Tuesday the 8th.

Super job has to go out to Jane Daubney-Goyette (Burgess Elementary NASP coach) and her helpers for a very successful tournament. GREAT JOB!!

Thank you to the following members for your support of the students in our schools.
